Executive Management
The Chief Executive Officer at Avians oversees all daily operations of the company according to its policies and the directions of the Board of Directors. Daily operations do not include any unforseen or unusual events. The CEO has final say in all matters pertaining to company activities, finances and oversees all company assets. The CEO reports to the Board of Directors at regular board meetings and ensures that all activities correspond to existing regulations, laws and company policies.
Chief Executive Officer
Kjartan Briem holds a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark with a focus on telecommunications. Kjartan has extensive experience in international relations and worked for more than two decades in the telecommunications industry in Iceland. For the majority of that time Kjartan served as CTO of Vodafone Iceland. Kjartan Briem was appointed CEO of Avians in January of 2021.
Director of Operations
Þórdís Sigurðardóttir holds an MBA from the University of Iceland and has completed professional training in air traffic control. She previously served as the Head of the Area Control Centre. She was appointed Director of Operations in 2020.
Director of Technology
Hans Lilliendal Karlson holds a B.Sc. in Software Engineering from Ingeniørhøjskolen in Copenhagen (DTU) and an Executive MBA from Reykjavík University. He previously worked at Veitur, where he was a member of the executive team from 2016 and led system development and control. Before that, he worked at FLSmidth Automation in Denmark and later at engineering consultancies in Iceland as a specialist and advisor in the energy sector. He was appointed Director of Technology at Avians in 2022.
Chief Financial Officer
Guðný Unnur Jökulsdóttir holds a B.Comm. in Business Administration from the University of Calgary and an M.Sc. in Financial Management and Information Technology from Aalborg University. She has worked at Avians and its predecessors since 2004 and has served as CFO since 2021.
Human Resources Manager
Þórunn Auðunsdóttir holds a B.Sc. in Business Administration from Reykjavík University and an M.Sc. in Human Resource Management from the University of Warwick. She previously worked in HR at PwC, Össur, and Kvika. She was appointed Director of Human Resources at Avians in 2021.
Board of Directors
Stefán Sigurðsson, a board member since 2021 and Chairman of Avians, holds a degree in economics from the University of Iceland, earned in 1996, and an M.Sc. in the same field from the University of Copenhagen, obtained in 2006. Stefán was CEO of Sýn, Vodafone Iceland, from 2014 to 2019. Prior to that, he served as Managing Director of Asset Management at Íslandsbanki for six years, from 2008 to 2014, and member of the bank’s Executive Committee. Stefán also serves on the board of Íslandsbanki and works on his own projects and advisory at Nordic Development. Stefán is an independent board member.
Valgerður Hrund Skúladóttir, born in 1963, board member since 2025, holds a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iceland (1987) and an MBA from the University of Miami (1989). Valgerður was one of the founders of Sensa in 2002 and served as Managing Director from the beginning until the end of August 2025. Before that, Valgerður worked at Tæknival from 1994 to 2001, most recently as Director of the Core Division. Valgerður now works in consulting and serves on various boards. Valgerður is an independent board member.
Árni Birgisson, board member since 2022, holds a B.Ed. degree from the Iceland University of Education (1995). Árni worked for the National Civil Protection Agency as head of the coordination division from 1996 to 2000, and as Public Information Officer at the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) from 2000 to 2001. In 2001 he joined the predecessors of Isavia ohf and now works as a specialist in service quality at Isavia. Árni is appointed to the board by the Isavia Group.
